The Beginning...
In 1902, a young minister,
Reverend
Edgar James Helms, pastor of
Morgan Memorial Chapel in the south end of Boston,
became concerned about the welfare of his community's immigrant, jobless poor.
He conceived a plan - the plan was simple!
Using burlap bags, Rev. Helms went door to door in
Boston's wealthiest districts asking for clothing, household goods - anything
else he could carry away. A workshop was set up in the church basement where
impoverished men and women were paid to repair the donated materials, which were
then sold. The income paid the worker's wages. People lined up seeking a

"Hand UP, not a Hand OUT"
and

GOODWILL WAS BORN!
Today, a world-wide network of Goodwill Industries organizations provide
vocational evaluation,
training, employment, job placement services, and community service
opportunities.
The Present...
Goodwill Industries of Lorain County is
located on the
“north coast”
of Ohio, on the premier recreational natural resource
of Ohio, Lake Erie.
This Goodwill serves all of Lorain County and the eastern
parts of
Huron and Erie Counties.
With the
support of a volunteer Board of Trustees, comprised of community leaders and
business professionals, Goodwill
Industries of Lorain County has established retail store
operations and industrial sub-contracting services as the basis of its
operations. Income from these operations and services support the
GOODWILL
mission, employees, and vocational rehabilitation programs.
